Instructions
If 90 % or more of the class completes all math challenges this month, with 75% correct or better, we will have a day that we get popcorn and capri sun. They must be done by the Friday due date, or they do not count. YOU MUST SHOW YOUR WORK ON MATH PROBLEMS IN THIS CLASS!!
Todays Topic is SCIENTIFIC NOTATION
Scientific notation is a way of writing really big or really small numbers so they are easier for you to read and understand quickly. A number between 1 and 10 is multiplied by a power of 10. For example the number 454,000,000,000,000. Ugh! Can you imagine having to do long division or multiplication and trying to keep track of all those zero's!!! Instead this number can be written as 4.54 x 10 14 . I just moved the decimal point 14 places to the left. The "14" which is slightly raised is called an exponent. Lets say its a very small number: .000000000000454. Again I move the decimal, but this time I am moving it to the right and my power of 10 will be a negative.......4.54 x 10-13 . NOW YOU ASK....HOW CAN I WRITE SCIENTIFIC NOTATION IN CANVAS! Above is the T2 Button. If you highlight the number you want to "superscript" ( Raise above the text line) It will raise the number. If you want to make a subcript, for say chemical equations you can use the subscript button.
If you move the decimal to the left, it will be positive.
If you move the decimal to the right, it will be negative.
Initialism ( Memory phrase): Large Pandas Read Nothing Left Postive Right Negative
