Example One- Multiplication:

( 7.7 x 103) ( 1.2 x 105)

Step 1: rearrange your equation so the coefficients and the bases are multiplied:   7.7 x 1.2 x 103 x 105 =

Step 2: Multiply the coefficients:  9.24 x 103 x 105 =

Step 3: Add the exponents of the bases: 9.24 x 103+5

Answer: 9.24 x 108

Example Two- Division:

7.43 x 10
3 x 104

Step 1: rearrange your equation so the coefficients are a fraction and the bases are a fraction:  7.43/3  x  103/ 104=

Step 2: Divide the coefficients:    2.477 x 103/104=

Step 3: Subtract the denominator exponent from the numerator exponent: 2.477 x 10 3-4 =

ANSWER: 2.477 x 10-1
